Top 5 Reasons Universal Orlando is Better than Walt Disney World

Image
When you think of Orlando, most people think of Disney.   That’s because Walt Disney World is the number one family destination in the world and has made Orlando a household name around the world.   But with the opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2010 and the new addition in 2014, Universal Orlando has become a major competitor in the family destination vacation market. Here are five advantages that Universal Orlando has over Walt Disney World: Number 1:   You can pay for front of the line passes!         Unlike the confusing Fast Pass System at Walt Disney World which only allows 3 Fast Passes per day, at Universal Orlando, you can purchase Universal's version of “fast pass” which is called Universal Express.   You can choose between a limited and unlimited version of this front of the line access for rides and attractions at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.  These passes ca...

How to Stay Healthy at Universal Orlando

Image
As someone who struggles with chronic foot pain, my doctors agree that losing weight can only help my situation.  I recently began Weight Watchers, using their Smart Points system to aid in the weight loss process.  The pounds are slowly coming off and I'm getting healthier every day.   But...I'm going to Universal Orlando!  How does one try to stick to their weight loss plan while visiting the mecca of tantalizing sweet treats and a fried food paradise?  I'm here to tell you that staying on track at Universal Orlando is easier than you might think! Getting in Your Steps There is one obvious aspect of a Universal Orlando vacation.  You will walk a lot!  The average theme park guest walks between five and seven miles per day.  While it may not always be heart-pumping cardio, you will burn lots of calories while you tour the parks.  Use modern tools to calculate how many steps you're taking by using devices such as a Fitbit whi...

Visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Image
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando is a magical place.  As described by the clever witch, J. K. Rowling, the Leaky Cauldron sign is not noticed by most muggles.  The wizards at Universal are clever indeed to recreate such an authentic place including lots of secrets to be discovered by muggles from around the globe! A first stop on your tour should be Ollivanders.  Watch and possibly be chosen for "The Wand Chooses the Wizard Ceremony."  As you exit through the wand shop, choose your interactive wand (or at several other locations) and use the enclosed map to cast spells and watch the magic happen! Enter Diagon Alley through the magic brick opening (muggles view it a little differently because of their non magical limitations).  As you enter the Wizarding World, all outside views of non magical parts of the theme parks magically disappear.  Total immersion is at hand.  You won't find muggle cola brands and brews here. ...

Mobility Issues Can't Stop Your Fun at Universal Orlando

Image
I recently visited Universal Orlando with my problem feet.  I have chronic foot pain and paratenonitis.  Theme park guests walk an average of no less than 5 miles per day.  If you are like me, that equals much of your day wasted in pain and "sit breaks."   Here are tips for guests with mobility issues to get the most out of their day at Universal Orlando: Rent an ECV.      Electronic Conveyance Vehicles (ECV's) otherwise known as electric scooters, give a feeling of independence and freedom to the guest with trouble walking or standing.  The average price at most Orlando theme parks is $50 per day (you can park hop by turning it in at each park and getting a new one at Disney).  At Universal Orlando, park hopping is allowed with your rented ECV. Get and Attraction Assistance Pass .  Visit Guest Services after entering the parks.  Tell them you have a medical issue which prevents you from standing in a long q...
